Three spots to get ice cream in Charlotte for warm summer days and nights.
When you think of the “food scene” in Charlotte, your mind goes to places like 300 East and Good Food on Montford. But what about the dessert scene? Now that we’re in the summer months, ice cream trips replace the warm coffee date of the winter. Here are our three picks for some of the best ice cream in Charlotte.
1) Va da Vie Gelato – 4203 Park Road, Charlotte, NC 28209
“Va da Vie” means “follow me” in Italian and we are ready to follow this ice cream shop anywhere. This decadent shop is on it’s own little island of Park Road Shopping Center and uses locally sourced milk to craft the freshest gelato. If the ingredient isn’t local, it’s probably one of their Italian-imported ingredients like pistachio paste and hazelnuts. The flavors are ever-changing and completely delectable.
2) Mr. K’s Soft Ice Cream – 2017 South Boulevard, Charlotte, NC 28203
Mr. K’s has been a Charlotte staple since 1967. The soft serve cones are simply excellent and if you’re feeling more adventourous, go for an “Ice Cream Blitz,” an option that allows for toppings like Butterfingers, pecans and Oreos (and more). If you want something smoother, the Banana Milkshake is quite the treat.
3) Pike’s Soda Shop – 1930 Camden Road, Charlotte, NC 28203
Another South End treasure, Pike’s Soda Shop is reminiscent of the feel-good hot-spot of the forties and fifties. If you’re going for a classic, try the Black Cow, a 3-scoop homemade vanilla ice cream root beer float. As if you needed another reason to try it out, parts of Jack Black’s movie Shallow Hal were filmed here. Just plain cool.
